Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is used to remove the fat deposits and loose skin that may form on the lower eyelids with age. Unfortunately there are many factors, including heredity and sun damage, that usually accelerate these changes.

Lower eyelid operation will last from 20 to 40 minutes and are made under local anesthesia with sedation. You will have to stay at a clinic or hospital from 2 to 12 hours depending on the way you feel.

Rehabilitation period is usually rather short but for the first three or four weeks, you should avoid any activity that increases blood flow to the eyes, including lifting, crying, bending, and sports. Your surgeon will let you know when you are ready for exercise. Also avoid drinking alcohol, which can lead to fluid retention and delay recovery. The scars will disappear in 2 – 3 weeks and at the same time you will be able to see the first results. There are practically no risks in lower eyelid surgery taking into consideration the fact that medicine is developing rapidly now. The effect you will achieve will last from 7 to 10 years depending on how you take care about your skin and appearance.

As any cosmetic operation blepharoplasty has some contra-indications such as cardiovascular diseases, for example. But in any case it is very important to consult your surgeon before making the final decision.
